About

"Healing starts with being heard."

Hello!

My name is Phillipa Haine and I am a registered Counselling Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (PS 0145300) as well as with the Board of Healthcare Funders (PR 087560). I have successfully completed the degrees, BSc (Genetics, Psychology and Human Physiology) and Hons (Psychology) Cum Laude at Stellenbosch University, as well as the degrees MA (Counselling Psychology) and PhD (Psychology) at Rhodes University; I completed my internship at the Rhodes University Student Counselling Centre.

I offer both online and in-person therapy. My services are offered in English and I currently specialise in working with young adults, adolescents and preteens with a range of psychological conditions. My therapy style incorporates an empathetic, non-judgemental and collaborative approach; creating a warm, trusting and authentic space where clients can explore new insights into themselves while being equipped with tools to bring about constructive change and alleviate distress.

While I am guided by evidence-based psychological interventions such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as well as Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), my perspective is that mental health is multifaceted and subsequently my approach is strengths based and holistic. This includes acknowledging the inextricable connection between the mind and body and as such considering the interconnected role of mental, physical and social factors on overall health and wellbeing.

In addition to my private practice, I am currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Stellenbosch University. My research interests are broadly located at the nexus of health psychology and public healthcare. I am passionate about improving access to, and quality of, mental healthcare services within the country.

I am also a contract lecturer at Rhodes University, with experience teaching and supervising research at Undergraduate, Honours and Master’s Degree levels. I have also published research in peer-reviewed local and international academic journals and presented research at various local academic conferences.

Currently, I have the honour of serving as vice-chair for the South African Association of Counselling Psychology Division with PsySSA.
